What is "active listening"? Do you have examples?

At a meeting last night, we heard about "active listening". Do you have examples of active listening? What tips do you have for being an active listener?

  1. Listening is actually a very hard skill for me. I consider myself a kinesthetic (not auditory) learner, and find that if I take notes while I'm listening, I get more out of what I hear and remember it better.

  2. I like to take notes while I am in a lecture but it can backfire when I get behind the speaker. :-)

  3. I've found that active listening requires a lot of pausing from me. That is, I need to focus on what someone is actually saying and not jump ahead (and interrupt) because I 'know' what s/he is going to say. Pausing, letting someone finish, and taking time to digest what was actually said has helped me improve as a listener.
